So after living with the scenario pictured below for way too long I decided it was time to find a proper place for all our hanging “stuff”…. all the bags and purses, sweaters and lunch boxes, and general clutter of everyday life.
We don’t have a proper entry area, just a 3-1/2 foot wide hall that the front door opens into, so the best scenario seemed to be to install some wall hooks right as you enter the house. I saw some great hooks on IKEA’s website a few months ago but on my last visit they were no longer available. The only hooks that were not sold as singles were the Leksvik hooks shown below.
I liked them but the look was a little too traditional for me. They were pretty inexpensive though, so I decided to buy them and figure out a way to “modern” them up! Eventually I decided a coat of paint would do the trick and went for mustard yellow. Our house is filled with earthy modern tones: brown, light blue, olive green etc., and I wanted to stay within that color palette but still add a little punch.
In retrospect, I should have sanded the finish off the back board because after priming and painting the board I did end up with some small paint crackles. Since I knew these would be covered up most of the time I decided it probably wasn’t worth the trouble to strip the paint , sand, and start over, but if you start a project like this from scratch I would definitely make sure to sand first.
My husband was skeptical of the project especially when I showed him where I wanted to put the hooks, but in the end he told me he loved it. Clutter contained!

What a beautiful entry you’ve created, Ana! It looks like the cover of a magazine (with the happy photo and the vivid colors) so I’m pinning it. As a coincidence, I also bought an Ikea coat rack and painted it orange-yellow too: http://meehameeha.blogspot.com/2012/02/happy-entryway.html
Your entry was one of the ones that inspired this idea! I didn’t know your coat rack was from IKEA! So funny.
I also have pinned this one http://thegoldjellybean.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/entry.jpg, which also used mustard colored coat rack.
Thanks Meeha!
Wow, it looks great against that charcoal wall, thanks!
