Creative Spaces for Kids: Writing Center

Slowly but surely the breakfast area within our kitchen is morphing into a craft and art space and here is the latest addition: a Writing Center.

I got the idea from reading Mariah Bruehl’s  Playful Learning: Develop Your Child’s Sense of Joy and Wonder. Ms. Bruehl has some wonderful suggestions for creating kid’s activity and craft spaces within your home and I loved the idea of encouraging children to write more often, including letters to loved ones and their own books. That said, my kids are still young, 3 and 5, and writing is a challenge, so for now I’m still formulating exactly what to include in this space; at this point the writing center consists only of a hanging wall pocket I made this week and some brightly colored paper. I hope that by giving the kids access to writing and drawing materials they will be more inclined to grab some paper and get creating. I will probably also place their homework folders here and artwork to be sorted. Somehow I would like to incorporate writing materials or expand on the mailing station idea and include some pockets for stamps and blank cards. It’s definitely a work in progress and I would love to hear your ideas for how to expand on this idea!

As for the wall pocket, it was super easy to make! I used the pattern/instructions from One Yard Wonders to create the pocket and the very cool Britten Nummer fabric from IKEA, gotta love the lettering as inspiration to get creative….
