Who doesn’t love a good kid’s science project that doubles as a toy? My kids love this little fella and he has been happily residing on my kitchen counter for the past two weeks. I’ve nicknamed him Fuzzy.
DIY Chia Pet
Materials:
- Knee high stockings
- Potting soil
- Wheat grass seeds
- Googly eyes
- Hot glue gun
- Rubber bands
- Paper cup with bottom cut out
- Water
Instructions:
- Dip a stocking in water to moisten it, wring it out.
- Place the cup inside the top of the stocking to create a make shift funnel. This will help you easily get the soil into the wet stocking.
- Drop in a teaspoon or so of wheat grass seeds, make sure they are at the bottom of the stocking.
- Fill the stocking with enough potting soil to make the body and head of your “creature”Tie a knot in the end of the stocking to prevent the soil from coming out. Cut the end of any remaining stocking off
- Use rubber bands to make a head and legs for the creature. Legs really help this from looking like a something you fished out of you know where!
- Glue a pair of googly eyes on using hot glue. Since this little guy will be moist most the time, hot glue is really your only option. We don’t have electricity at my son’s school, where we first did this project, so we used Sharpie markers to make the eyes and mouths. After the creature is moist however, you can’t really see the marker anymore. When we got home I glued on the eyes.
- Water your creature! I let him sit in a bowl of water for a couple of days to really keep the seeds moist. Now he is sitting on a small plate and I pour a little water over his head daily.
- Place him in a sunny or semi-sunny spot near a window in your home.
In about four days he’ll start growing hair!
I’m about to give this guy a haircut, he’s growing so fast! Who knew doing science projects with your kids could be so much fun?
